Session 17 | Home Dialysis and Infection Prevention
Day: Monday, July 22 Time: 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. Type/Topic: Operations/Regulatory/Legal Compliance
Room Location: Butler
Session Summary
According to the National End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Census Data1, as of September 2023, there are 519,471 patients on dialysis within the United States. Of those patients, 4,097 receive dialysis nationally in a skilled nursing center. These numbers are estimated to increase over the next decade due to the increase in patients diagnosed with diabetes and hypertension. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has recently updated guidance for home dialysis services within a skilled nursing center. With an estimated 15 percent of the dialysis population projected to reside within a skilled nursing center at some point during a calendar year, the number of long term care facilities providing on-site dialysis services is also increasing. This presentation will discuss the unique infection prevention challenges within hemodialysis units and the best infection prevention practices of contracted dialysis companies to protect residents.
