Session Summary

New laws and regulations have been enacted and interpretations of existing laws are changing. It is easy to put the cart before the horse and misjudge the impact of labor and employment law, resulting in financial harm not only to your center but also to yourself. Presenters will explore the most commonly misunderstood areas of employment law, updated for 2023, to help avoid costly litigation. The second part of this session will feature a panel discussion on positive employee engagement. Increasing evidence shows a connection between engaged employees and stronger business performance. Positive employee experiences can lead to higher productivity, a decrease in turnover and better retention of knowledge and skills. Join this interactive session to hear from attorneys and profession peers who are putting engagement at the center of work as they discuss established strategies on how to improve the employee engagement process.

Justin McConnell is an attorney with the Orlando office of Fisher Phillips and serves as a member of the firm’s Healthcare Practice. Her experience includes, litigation, providing day-to-day advice on workplace issues, defending charges before administrative agencies, developing and reviewing handbooks, offering preventive strategies through training and risk assessments before and after lawsuits.

About the Presenter

Megan is a partner based in Fisher Phillips’ Fort Lauderdale office. She represents healthcare employers, including long term care, assisted living, and home health, among others with both litigation and counseling needs. Her day-to-day includes situations involving alleged discrimination, denial of leave, wage and hour matters, or restrictive covenants, both at the administrative level and in court. She also counsels employers on ways to reduce litigation risks, presents trainings on employment law compliance, and assists with drafting policies and contracts.

Senior Counsel | Michael Miller has practiced labor and employment law for more than 50 years. He serves as Labor Relations Counsel to FHCA, a position that Mike has held since 1985. During his career, Mike has guided FHCA members in labor matters ranging from union organizing to Wage and Hour, and to EEOC issues.
