Session Summary
U.S. Department of Veterans' Affairs eligibility for services and application for coverage are complicated. This session will provide you with information on long term care programs for veterans and their spouses. It will provide eligibility standards, the application process to receive benefits, where you can get assistance with this process and how your center can apply to be a VA contracted nursing center.Presenters

About the Presenter
Bob Asztalos is a Navy veteran and the Deputy Executive Director of the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs. He previously served as: Chief Operating Officer for Medical Equipment and Supplies of America, a disabled veteran owned company that contracts with the Veterans Administration; Chief Lobbyist for the Florida Health Care Association; Senior Congressional Affairs Representative for the American Health Care Association; and Associate Director of Government Affairs with the American Physical Therapy Association.Marlies Sarrett

About the Presenter
Wende Phillips has served as the Social Work Supervisor for Geriatrics & Extended Care (GEC) at the Orlando VA Healthcare System since 2012, where she manages over $30M annually in care in the community for over 2,250 Veterans. Ms. Phillips serves as the Contracting Officer’s Representative for 15 contracted Community Nursing Homes and manages the State Veterans Home, Veteran Directed Care, Community Adult Day Health Care, Homemaker/Home Health Aide and Home Respite programs. She serves as a liaison for the Community Living Center, Home Based Primary Care, Medical Foster Home, and Hospice programs. Wende is Chair-elect for the Social Work Leadership Development Committee, Lead for the Fireside Chat Charter, and Chair for the VISN 8 Non-Institutional Care (NIC) Community of Practice. She is an active member of Orlando VAHCS Rehab & Extended Care Committee, VISN 8 Rehab & Extended Care Communities of Practice, and National GEC Workgroup. Ms. Phillips has worked with the Orlando VA since 2007 and is a graduate of VISN 8’s Competency Development for Leaders course. She shared her passion for learning and teaching through serving as Orlando VA’s MSW Internship Coordinator for four years as a collateral duty, receiving the MSW Field Supervisor of the Year and MSW Program Community Partner of the Year awards. Ms. Phillips has been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker since 2001 and has served as an adjunct faculty member at University of Central Florida’s (UCF) Master of Social Work program.Roy Ward
Veterans’ Claims Examiner II | Roy Ward serves as Veterans’ Claims Examiner II for the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs. Ward retired from the United States Army after more than 33 years of service. He served in more than 20 countries including combat tours in Kuwait, Iraq, and Afghanistan. His awards include the Distinguish Service Medal, Legion of Merit and Bronze Star. Ward is a graduate from the Glen R. Jones College of Business with a M.B.A.
